Amman Design Week’s Crafts District is a celebration of contemporary crafts inspired by traditional techniques and the use of local materials. Additionally, crafts enthusiasts can engage in craft-related workshops, demonstrations, and exhibitions around the city.
Below are some spaces dedicated to crafts that you can visit during Amman Design Week – from Jabal Amman and Jabal Al Lweibdeh to downtown and Al Muqablain.
Alaydi Crafts Center is a beacon for crafts in the city, founded in 1979 and dedicated to the preservation of local heritage and enhancement of traditional crafts and support of Jordanian craftsmen and artisans. In cooperation with TIRAZ: Widad Kawar Home for Arab Dress, Alaydi exhibits work done by Jordanian women who were trained to embroider traditional Jordanian stitches from the Ma’an area in an effort to revive and preserve this heritage. Taking inspiration from these traditions, they also produced embroidery with modern ideas and designs on dresses, bags, shawls, handbags, cushions, and abayas.
Visit the Petra National Trust cultural hub at the beautiful Bayt Yaish house in Jabal Al Lweibdeh, recently renovated by Khammash Architects, to learn more about their programs that enhance and spread awareness of cultural heritage, and to better understand the notions of identity and world heritage standards.
On Wild Jordan’s open day for crafts on October 5th, stop by to meet Anwar from the biscuit house, who will be live baking, Nihal who will be sharing stories about the products, and Firyal, from the calligraphy house, who will be hosting an Arabic calligraphy writing session.
Also in Jabal Amman, stop by the Turquoise Mountain showroom, which includes a wide range of products developed in collaboration with some of the most skilled artisans working in different craft disciplines, including mother of pearl inlay, wood mosaic, and metalwork, to design and produce a range of products. Turquoise Mountain’s home in Jordan is located in Jabal Amman in a building dating from the 1940s. In addition to its offices, it houses a showroom, training and production workshops, and a space for cultural heritage activities.
You can also sign up for their workshops including a five-day jewelry workshop on sand casting techniques, offering audiences a chance to learn to produce jewelry designs by sculpting wax and casting silver in sand molds. Or sign your children up to a two-day workshop for children ages 10 to 13 years old on stone mosaic making and geometric pattern drawing.
For those more interested in printmaking, stop by Amman Design Week’s Crafts District at the Kabariti Village for an introduction to illustration, playing with lines, textures, and fabrics, in a workshop facilitated by Basbous. How does a lino-cut look on cotton? What are the engraving tools and techniques used to carve wood? How does silkscreen work and how are these methods different in color and result? Through this workshop, participants will attempt to collaboratively answer these questions in an intimate and interactive setting.
A similar workshop is offered downtown at the Duke’s Mosaic Center, facilitated by Yacoub Bahbahani as drop-in sessions, and is available for participants with special needs.
You can also venture out to al Muqabelain to visit the Bunayat Center for Special Education, which showcases the handicrafts done by special needs students including ceramics, mosaics, carpentry, and weaving.
