Lying at the intersection of science, technology, invention, and design; Amman Design Week 2019 brings designers together with farmers to present new ways of looking at the future of food.
With a focus on product design and making, the ONExUNICEF Humanitarian change-maker lab has supported aspiring designers to come up with real solutions for challenges and needs faced on a daily basis. At Amman Design Week 2019, four aspiring designers living in Za’atari Camp are presenting unique products, being exhibited at the Hangar Exhibition and at the Future Food / Future City showcase.
Ibrahim Al Alzoubi and Mohammad Alhamadi are two aspiring designers who are also ambitious students continuing their studies in civil engineering and accounting respectively. They present a product which was developed as a response to the frequent interruption of electricity in the camp, and the need for young people to study and read in the dark. The ‘AnglerPen’ is a battery-powered low-cost pen with an LED light. It is rechargeable, is easily carried by a clip that can be attached to a pocket, and serves multiple target groups including frequent travelers.

Abbas Al Faouri, a 22-year-old designer with aspirations to become an inventor, is presenting a low-cost microscope at the Hangar Exhibition. The microscope can be operated using ultraviolet, infrared, and visible light and can be connected to a screen or a smartphone. The magnification power can reach more than 800x, which makes it suitable to observe various types of cells, chromosomes, and paramecium that are found in shallow waters. In addition to being an educational tool, the microscope can also be used for autopsies.

On a more urban scale, Seba Al Diri and teammates are presenting a redesigned version of the IKEA Growroom at the Future Food / Future City Showcase. The eco-friendly structure will include a water fountain in the center, reflecting on Syrian architectural typologies and culture. At the end of the showcase, the Growroom will be placed in a youth center in Za’atari Camp to serve as a safe space for young people.
ONExUNICEF Humanitarian Change-maker Labs are also giving a talk under the title “Changemakers and Innovators”, where they discuss their stories of change-making and how a desire to solve their community problems at Za'atari Camp has catalyzed their vision of problem-solving in the MENA region.
The talk will take place on the 58th of October, at 6:30 pm, at the Amman Design Week Stage at Al Hussein Cultural Center in Ras El Ain.
