The Hangar Exhibition
For the Hangar Exhibition 2019, Bethlehem-based architects Elias and Yousef Anastas are presenting a stone column made out of architectural ruins with an approach that seeks to integrate salvaged building components in contemporary architecture.
The stone column is made out of collected stone architectural ruins with elements coming from different periods and illustrating different techniques of construction. Stones were geometrically analyzed and through stereotomy research, interfaces between the stone elements were created in order to build a self-standing column. This research focuses on the re-use of stone elements and their adaptation to new forms and configurations, as structural elements of architecture. It addresses the possibilities of reusing stone as a structural material as well as the finite resource that it embodies and its consequent effect on the natural landscape.
Elias and Yousef Anastas are also the founders of Local Industries, a network of industrial furniture-making. During Amman Design Week 2019, the designers invite viewers to experience their new collection, which will be on display in Turbo opening on the 6th of October. Among the designs unveiled is the sub-collection TAWI, named after a technique consisting of folding thin steel sheets to rigidify essential parts of different furniture pieces. Local Industries will also be presenting Khalil steel chair that comes in a single, double or triple seater configuration, as well as a shelving system, an armchair, a counter, a rocking deckchair, and many other surprises.
