Dr. Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès will be holding a public talk where she will be speaking about the many forms that curating design can take today, ‬from a research investigation that expands into the creation of commissioned works‭, ‬to publications‭, ‬to a physical or virtual exhibition‭. ‬Drawing on her professional experience with Khatt Foundation, AbiFarès highlights the role of the curator as a facilitator and a catalyzer of various‭ ‬ideas and professional practices in the service of communicating a particular idea or theme‭. ‬Issues that will be addressed will include ‬combining a unique local perspective to a wider regional and/or universal design concerns‭, ‬and connecting heritage and local crafts to contemporary design techniques‭, ‬production/distribution methods‭.

This talk is part of the public program running alongside the ‘Intro to curating contemporary design course’, sponsored by the British Council and with the support of Careem.

About Dr. Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès

Dr. Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès is the Founding Director of the Khatt Foundation and Khatt Books publishers. She holds degrees in graphic design and design history from Leiden University, Yale University, and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). She is a member of Alliance Typographique Internationale (AGI). She specializes in typography and design research. She has curated exhibitions and published on design from the Arab World since 2001.
