Textile Innovation Lab I - Material Innovation was the first in a series of workshops and programs and held in a collaboration between Amman Design Week and Goethe Institute - Jordan, and took place 9 - 18 December 2018.

The workshop was facilitated by the German textile expert Annette Fauvel and the Jordanian designer Basma Omar.
10 designers and makers from different backgrounds participated in the workshop.
The workshop introduced participants to the processes in which sustainable and alternative materials can be produced and used in textile applications.
Participants learned how to use kombucha leather growing, paper-making, and bio-plastics for the development of new materials.
Participants experimented with new and traditional techniques and materials, combining and using them to produce their own prototypes.
The workshop took place over nine days and included a series of introductions to local practices and tours to factories and sites.
The workshop also included site visits to textile production facilities in Jordan, where participants learned about traditional techniques such as natural dying, paper making, embroidery and weaving.
Each workshop of the series will explore a specific theme related to any of the broad aspects of the textile industry; from materials, processes and techniques, to applications and uses.

Participants also visited Essa Ahmad Farrah Carpet shop, where they introduced to carpet weaving techniques using the traditional loom.
Participants visited 'Tan Crafts' where they learned about producing natural dyes using organic products like vegetables and fruits.
