Textile Innovation Lab V - Techniques in Hand Weaving will introduce participants to the principles of hand weaving on a frame or ‘tapestry’ loom, including how to dress the loom, plan the weaving, and practice the basic weave structures- plain weave, basket weave, ribs and twills. Included in this skill-based workshop is an introduction to experimental weaving and creating different textures through weaving.
Participants will be given the chance to plan a personal project in the theme of ‘experimental weaving’ and complete the project with the guidance of the facilitator. This workshop is the first in a series conducted by Ishraq Zraikat, and is a qualifying workshop for upcoming more advanced workshops. No previous experience is required for this workshop.
The workshop will take place over 5 days, from 29 August to 2 September 2020, with a 2-hour talk on the first day, and 3 hours of engagement in each of the following days. More details about the talk can be found here.
Interested applicants must submit their applications online by the 26 August, 2020. Participants will be selected based on their applications and letters of intent.

Ishraq Zraikat is a Jordanian textile artist, weaver, and wool researcher. She attained an undergraduate degree in Architecture before pursuing her graduate study in Textile and Material Design from NABA in Milano. Her research-based practice bridges various design disciplines through an appreciation of craft and fiber/ textile media. Ishraq specializes in sustainable practices of processing wool from animal to finished product. She previously participated at Amman Design Week 2016 and 2019’s Hangar Exhibition.
The Textile Innovation Lab is a series of workshops and programs that explore innovative solutions and ideas within the textile industry. Each workshop of the series explores a specific theme related to any of the broad aspects of the textile industry; from materials, to processes and techniques, to applications and uses.
The first workshop was in 2018 and explored making textile alternatives using kombucha, paper, and bioplastics. The second, third, and fourth workshops took place during Amman Design Week 2019, and were led by British-Turkish designer Esna Su, who introduced techniques in weaving, coiling, and knitting using unconventional materials. This fifth edition with Ishraq Zraikat introduces techniques in hand weaving on a frame loom, encouraging experimentation with textures and materials.
How to Apply
Eligibility Requirements
- The workshop is open to all local professionals, innovators, craftspeople, and designers that have an interest in textile design and exploring and developing weaving techniques.
- Participants must commit to the full duration of the workshop, of 5 days, with a 2-hour talk on the first day, and 3 hours in each of the following days.
- This workshop is for beginners, and no prerequisite weaving skills are required.

- Eligible participants are required to fill the online application form and submit a letter of motivation and interest for participating in this workshop, as well as their portfolio and CV.
- Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
