Future Food/Future City
Lying at the intersection of science, technology, invention, and design; Amman Design Week 2019 brings designers together with farmers to present new ways of looking at the future of food.
Under the theme of 2019, Amman Design Week introduces Future Food/Future City, an open-air demonstration of possibility; an imagined future for the city’s public spaces, and a re-examined illustration of how our rooftops, gardens, streets, and schools could be transformed into green spaces that bring communities together and transform livelihoods.
The showcase is intended as an educational exhibition, introducing a holistic approach that tackles different parts of the food chain; the way food is grown, processed, transported, consumed, reused, and recycled. Funded by Investbank and supported by Yasamin Landscape and Gardening, it houses a collection of structures - greenhouses, domes, wooden pavilions and public seating areas – all overgrown with decorative plants, flowers, fruits, herbs and vegetables.
The designers behind Greening The Camps are creating three structures made of a modular system and used as information booths and food kiosks for the showcase. The modular structures, as well as other exhibited works in the exhibition, are intended to be repurposed and sent to be installed permanently as rooftop spaces for food production at the Gaza Camp in Jerash.
Greening The Camps is a non-profit organisation that designs, builds and maintains productive rooftop farms in refugee camps and dense urban fabrics. Through reconnecting displaced communities with food production from urban agricultural practices, this project aims to create opportunities for local empowerment and economic development, to mitigate the lack of access to agricultural lands and to revive residents with their cultural heritage of farming by creating spaces for ideas and creativity – tiny green oases where communities can grow their own food provision, find rest and a refuge to escape the daily routine.
