The Hangar Exhibition
In 2007, Rabee Zureikat founded the Zikra Initiative to expose economically sound urban communities to new cultural and regional perspectives. The initiative works with the Ghor Al Mazra’a community and creates exchange programs to bridge urban communities with local marginalized communities and transfer knowledge, resources, and skills.
With 13,000 inhabitants, the Ghor al Mazra’a community struggled against many challenges from discrimination, stereotyping, insufficient household income and a lack of job opportunities.
The two-way equal exchange provided by the Zikra Initiative allows rural communities to develop pride in their culture and preserve their unique identity and traditions, and offers urban communities an opportunity to learn about their cultural heritage.
In May of 2016, the Zikra Initiative, with the support of Amman Design Week, launched a workshop and competition with the children of Ghor Al Mazra’a to introduce basic upcycling techniques.
Zikra is exhibiting a group of Wire Cars as their feature in ADW. The significance of this retro toy is highlighting the creativity and resourcefulness of children and how they articulate environmental attentiveness through conservation, reusing and recycling.
