Design For Impact: Amman's Local Markets
Designing Contemporary Heritage
NExAR is an initiative that connects the Netherlands to the Middle East, and initiates multidisciplinary projects between Netherlands and Jordan. This year’s Amman Design Week brings four Dutch designers and designer studios to Amman; T+LOCAL, Studio Mieke Meijer, Michiel Martens, and Paul Hughes.
T+LOCAL is a leading design organization that uses design strategies to produce innovative solutions from the perspective of the user. They will be giving a workshop using the cultural and historic local markets in downtown Amman as a case study to learn basic concepts in social design. Whether designing products, furniture, architectural pieces, or systems, T+LOCAL works with the communities to research solutions for better environments.
Studio Mieke Meijer, is a collaboration between Mieke Meijer and Roy Letterlé. The studio works on forming alternate spatial structures, within the liminal field between architecture and product design. They will present their work at Amman Design Week and focus on the idea of designing contemporary heritage.
Michiel Martens co-founded Studio Martens & Visser in 2011, and will discuss dynamic design and the creation of motion in design through his workshop Material in Motion.
Paul Hughes is an internationally renowned speaker who will be in Amman to introduce his concept of Ten Meters of Thinking, a unique visual-verbal performance where he explores leadership, innovation and communication to stimulate development.
Furthermore, founder and director of T+LOCAL and NExAR, Dennis Meulenbroeks will discuss design as a creative discipline that creates bridges between different cultures, and how design adds value to culture.
